Sippy Sidhu’s Murder Case

Sukhmanpreet Singh Sidhu, alias Sippy Sidhu, was shot dead on 20 September 2015 at a park in Sector 27, Chandigarh, by some unidentified person. According to the police, a .12 bore gun was used in the crime and around four bullets were fired at him. Subsequently, a case of murder was registered by the UT Police in the Sector 26 police station. Sidhu’s family accused Kalyani, Sippy’s former girlfriend, of the murder. According to Sidhu’s mother,
We told the police that the judge’s husband and a relative of theirs had threatened Sippy, following which I told him to remain cautious. The judge’s daughter also came to our house in August and asked Sippy whether he would marry her. We suspect that he was murdered due to his refusal to marry the girl. The police probe will reveal the true culprit.”
In 2016, the case was transferred to the CBI on the request of the Chandigarh administration. During CBI’s initial investigation, the alleged role of Kalyani in the murder case cropped up. The agency further filed an untraced report before the court, in which it requested a further investigation into Kalyani’s role. In September 2016, CBI announced a cash reward of Rs. 5 lakh for anyone with leads on Sidhu’s killer that could help the agency crack the case. Later, the CBI gave a newspaper advertisement saying,
There is reason to believe that a woman was accompanying Sippy’s killer at the time of the murder. The said woman is also being given this opportunity to come forward and contact us if she is innocent. Otherwise it shall be presumed that she was a party to the offence.”
In 2021, the agency raised the reward money to Rs. 10 lakh and requested the general public to come forward if they have any crucial information about the murder. However, CBI failed to progress in the case. During the hearing, the CBI asked the court to grant the agency a month’s time to file a status report. In June 2022, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its application seeking Kalyani’s remand for 10 days said that it wanted to interrogate Kalyani to find the other person involved in the crime and the weapon and vehicles used in the crime. A CBI spokesperson said,
During further investigation, the alleged involvement of accused (Kalyani Singh) came forth in the case. Accordingly, she was examined and arrested.”

On the other hand, the lawyers of Kalyani opposed the request for police remand made by the CBI and termed it as an abuse of law. They said,
It is a six-year-old case and CBI had even filed an untraced report. She (Kalyani) had earlier joined investigations but nothing incriminating was found against her.”
However, the special judicial magistrate, CBI Chandigarh, Sukhdev Singh, dismissed the plea made by Kalyani’s counsel and granted a four-day remand for Kalyani. Sukhdev Singh, in his verdict, said,
Though it is an old case and earlier attempts to uncover real events of crime were not successful, the CBI kept attempting to collect evidence. Declining police remand at this stage would only thwart investigations in its early stage.”
The court further directed Kalyani’s counsels to remain present during the investigation in the police station without actively participating or interfering in the investigation process. The court granted permission to Kalyani to use her own clothes during the CBI custody, subject to checking.

Disclosures made by the CBI

Marriage Refusal Led to Murder

The CBI’s investigations concluded that Kalyani was in a relationship with Sippy and wanted to marry him. However, Sippy’s family didn’t approve of their relationship, which apparently led to Sidhu’s murder. In a media conversation, the CBI while attributing the motive to Sippy’s murder, said,
She wanted to marry him but her proposal was turned down by Sippy’s family. Sippy had leaked her objectionable photos to her parents and friends, which had caused embarrassment to Kalyani and her family.”
CBI further said,
Kalyani on September 18, 2015, had contacted Sippy through mobile phones of other persons and compelled him to meet her in the park on Sector 27, Chandigarh, where the two had met between September 18 and September 20, the night of when he was murdered.”

Accused Kalyani of Conspiracy

The CBI investigations also revealed that Kalyani conspired to eliminate Sippy Sidhu along with an unknown assailant. Apparently, she called Sippy many times and compelled him to meet her at a park in Sector 27, Chandigarh. Sippy, when reached the part, was attacked by a firearm. During a media conversation, the CBI said,
The post-mortem report of deceased Sukhmanpreet Singh Sidhu reflects that the murder was committed by using short gun firearm ammunition.”
Further, the CBI said that Kalyani and his partner were both seen running away from the spot after Sippy’s murder. Some sources revealed that a Maruti Zen car with its last four-digit “1183” was spotted at the place of the incident at the time of the murder. During a hearing a CBI spokesperson said,
During her earlier examination she was evasive in answering the relevant questions and was also found deceptive in the polygraph test on the questions/issues related to the murder.”
